How should we ice, then?

Image
Kelly Starrett’s MobilityWOD put out the message that icing is no longer recommended. After a lot of discussion and digestion, I posted a response about whether or not we should still ice. It looked at several issues from the MWOD post, including the cited research. The conclusion was that the research and practice were conflicting, and therefore it’s too inconclusive to definitively throw icing out the window. Furthermore, there were just too many unanswered questions about the effect of ice on things like lymphatics permeability and prostaglandins. The MWOD post also didn’t distinguish between different types of injuries, which is incredibly important. To clarify, none of this is an attack on Kelly himself. Remember that he’s arguably done more for prehab and rehab in the last few years than anyone else. The fact that he’s so well respected is why I’m researching and discussing the “do not ice” claim in depth. It’s okay to disagree with someone; at the same time it’s still possible ...

More gender-neutral bathrooms planned for FIU

Image
FIU is currently installing a gender-neutral bathroom in Graham Center and another will be added in Recreation Services ’ Rec Center during its expansion later this year. These will be in addition to the nine existing gender-neutral bathrooms in Housing and the one family bathroom in Rec Center. With an estimated 10 percent of the FIU community identifying as LGBTQ, the request for gender-neutral bathrooms has grown, and allows students and faculty to use the restroom without having to identify with one specific gender. “ Gender neutral bathrooms should be the norm not the exception,” said Gisela Vega, associate director, LGBTQA Initiatives. “In some public spaces such as shopping malls and restaurants, they are already the norm.” Some areas of campus have taken notice and either converted or are planning for gender-neutral bathrooms to be included in future construction plans . Housing converted eight bathrooms to gender-neutral in September 2014 located in Parkview, Everglades, and...

Steam Shower Enclosure / Unit in new basement bathroom

Image
lauriaj October 1, 2013 We are making the plans to finish our basement. We like big showers and recently remodeled our master bathroom to have a decent size shower , however the experience was a nightmare with water leaking through our ceiling and floor sloping done incorrectly. A self-contained unit right now sounds really nice. Right now we have a 4 X 6 ft 3 3/4in area set aside for the new shower. I am guessing by the time we build a custom shower that size, it will be very close in price to one of those self- contained steam shower units (although most are smaller which may be ok if it's not TOO small). I'd like to frame around it so it has more of a built in look. Wondering if anyone has done this before (pics would be GREAT) or has good or bad experiences with those types of units? Thanks!
