How to Bathe Your Baby

When it comes to newborn bath time , the more hands, the better — in other words, make the first few baths a team effort. Set up beforehand, and do it when you’re feeling calm. (Breathe. In…out…in. Good.) Commit to letting voicemail pick up any calls — for this project, all your attention should be on baby. Here’s what you need for a successful bath time : Washing station Whether you bathe baby in a sink lined with a soft surface or a plastic tub with a sling placed in the real bath, your setup should be steady and there shouldn't be anything hard or sharp for baby to accidentally knock against. Position baby’s head away from the faucet (and use a soft faucet cover , if you have one). Warm room Keep the temperature raised so it’s not a shock to baby’s system when she comes out of the bath. Babies have a hard time regulating their core temperature, so they shouldn’t be chilled for too long. Water Fill the tub about three inches with water a little bit warmer than lukewarm. Submerg...

Bay Area bath renovation

Image
Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Michelle and Brian White's bathroom was a tight squeeze. The outdated split space consisted of two tiny, jam-packed rooms, making it rather confining. "One room, which made you feel like you were in a very small closet, housed the toilet only. The other was stuffed with a sink, cabinet and tub with a bulky metal shower curtain rod that swung around it," Michelle says. "Worse still, the tub and sink were mauvish beige and the floor linoleum gray . Yikes! It was the worst." When the Whites remodeled their entire San Francisco home , the master bath was the top priority. With the space totally gutted , designer Tineke Triggs , of Artistic Designs for Living in San Francisco, had a blank canvas. What she didn't have was a lot of space to work with. Although the house had grown to accommodate this master suite, its bath area was just 8516 feet. Triggs quickly zeroed in on her primary challenge: delivering, within the long...

After months of controversy, Texas bathroom bill dies quietly

In the end, the controversial bathroom bill went quietly. For more than a year, Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick led the crusade for a state law to regulate bathroom use for transgender Texans — an initiative that resonated with social conservatives, including many pastors, who backed him up. Patrick for months stood firm in his pursuit for a bathroom bill even while similar campaigns in other states fizzled out. He was met by loud opposition that only grew with time and eventually proved to be a considerable political force. Transgender women, men and children from across Texas descended on the Capitol to testify about how the proposal — which would ban local policies that ensured transgender individuals ’ right to use public and school restrooms that match their gender identity — could endanger their lives. The business community rallied against the legislation too, giving House Speaker Joe Straus cover as he refused to negotiate with Patrick on bathroom restrictions. The Texas...

Luxurious Bath Makes A Splash

March 26, 1988 | By Susanne Hupp of The Sentinel Staff The master bathroom is on its way to becoming the largest, most luxurious room in the house. Already many new houses have master baths that are bigger than master bedrooms, and, at sizes that range to 26 feet by 16 feet, some are as big as family rooms. Enlarging and glamorizing the master bath is not just a Florida fancy; it's a national phenomenon, if marketing research by the National Kitchen and Bath Association is any indication. Additionally, the demand for bigger, better baths -- that almost always include closet and dressing space -- is not confined to new construction. The association has determined that 5. 5 million existing bathrooms are scheduled to be updated this year. In the execution of these updates remodelers often acquire an entire room next to the master bedroom to allow space for the bath- dressing suite. As the bath acquires the role of dressing room, the master bedroom -- somewhat smaller than the bath-d...

5 Reasons I Do This Weird And Uncomfortable Thing Every Morning

Image
August 14, 2017 A cold shower | iStock.com Would you start your day, every day, by taking part in the ice bucket challenge ? Few of us would be willing to take an ice bath even on a hot summer day . But many days, especially during the coldest months, I find myself dreading getting out of bed to start my day. That’s because I begin my workday with a fairly unorthodox ritual : I take a cold shower. In a day and age where cryotherapy is gaining popularity, and where you can literally freeze the fat right off of your body, taking a cold shower in the morning doesn’t seem that out of the box. But it’s a habit that took me a long time to adopt. Typically, you want to get out of bed and head into a comforting, warm shower. It’s almost like you’re going from one bed to another — and that’s a perfectly fine way to start your day. ")}; Changing it up, though, has afforded me some unanticipated benefits. The truth is, I started my arctic shower odyssey after reading an article in the New ...

I Never Thought I'd Want To Staple A Shower Curtain Until I Saw Her Brilliant Idea!

Phil is an Editor at LittleThings. He loves writing and the outdoors. You can often find him at the movies or the park. I am always looking to explore my artistic side. Whether I’m doodling on a napkin, taking photographs of a beautiful sunset, or singing in the shower, I love to express myself creatively. Naturally though, I thought that singing in the shower would be about the only “art” I’d be making while in the bathroom, but boy was I wrong. I try to recycle regular household objects like repurposing a cheap coat hanger  into a chip clip, but I never thought that an ordinary bathroom object could be turned into a work of art. However, once I took a closer look at my shower curtain as a potential canvas, I realized that the sky is the limit. When I saw what Morgan did with her shower curtain, I was amazed at the possibilities. Her easy-to-follow take on how to make art out of an ordinary shower curtain has really got my creative juices flowing . I’ve heard of being creative with...

Bathroom Updates For Resale | POPSUGAR Home

Image
After buying our condo three years ago, my husband and I knew we'd eventually have to redo the guest bathroom in our hallway. It had a wobbly shower insert , dated finishes, and an impractical vanity without much storage. I hated going in there. So after a couple years of saving — and avoiding the room — we decided to bite the bullet and take on a small remodel project . A before photo of my bathroom. An after photo of my bathroom. Creating a bathroom that reflected my own style was one of the main goals of the project. But I also wanted to stay in budget and avoid quirky updates that would decrease the value of my home. After doing some research, I discovered where I could save — and where I should splurge. Don't just take my word for it. I caught up with HGTV star Scott McGillivray to check my work. After talking to him, I now know which updates gave me the most bang for my buck. McGillivray is the host of Income Property and wrote How to Add Value to Your Home . According...
